ABOUT:
I’m still catching my breath from a weekend of punk rock intensity. I did the Slash Magazine book art show Friday, the Johnny Ramone Tribute last night, but the A-Bomb of punk rock music and art was Banned in Babylon: The Art and Culture of Bad Brains, the art and music shindig at Subliminal Projects on Saturday night. I’ve been a Bad Brains fan for 30 plus years and lucky to work with them on a few projects but nothing like what we were able to put together between Obey Clothing and an incredible group of artists and musicians for an indoor – outdoor feast of Bad Brains. The indoor art included my work, Darryl Jenifer, photographers Lucian Perkins, Jeannie “Aunt Jean” Pawlowski, and John Mousheghian. And our makeshift music venue in the parking lot showcased Trash Talk, the cream of the crop of the current generation of hardcore, and a supergroup playing Bad Brains songs consisting of Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains, Peter Stahl of Scream, Chuck Treece of McRad, Moby and secret guest Dave Grohl of Scream and a couple lesser known bands Nirvana and the Foo Fighters.
The energy was out of control, we almost got shut down by the fire marshal but I had the time of my life and was reminded why this music and its spirit means so much to so many people, including me.
We’re still gathering photos and video from the show so stay tuned for more Bad Brains action!
